Fairford guide

Fairford is a well located town that sits on a lovely stretch of the River Coln in the Cotswold Hills situated east of Cirencester, west of Lechlade and north of Swindon.

About Fairford

It has origins dating back to the 9th Century and was also an important coaching town on the old London to Gloucester route with some of the Inns and Hotels today, reminders of this bygone era.

There has been a Mill in Fairford since Medieval times, the Mill even gets a mention in the Domesday Book. In 1086 there were actually three working Mills belonging to Fairford Manor, one of which was on the site of the current Mill.

The town has a traditional market every Wednesday with a variety of stalls including fish, cheese, fresh flowers and plants, jewellery, artisan foods and much more, along with a continental market twice a year and a festive market for Christmas on the first Friday of December.

There is a good selection of schooling around the area with Fairford having its own pre-school, primary school and secondary school.

Fairford attracts many walkers, there are short heritage walks around the town along with picturesque walks in the countryside and along the River Coln where there is the opportunity to see kingfishers, swans, little grebe, brown trout and water voles. Cotswold Water Park offers water based activities as well as walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. It also has its own beach and despite its size, 150 lakes in 40 square miles, it’s a well kept secret.

Also, Farmor’s Sports Centre offers sports and fitness activities along with fitness programmes to suit people of all ages.
