Living on Minchinhampton Common and adjoining Rodborough Common, with the sense of freedom that 1,000 acres of beautiful grasslands and woodlands literally at our garden gate has been a delight for us for the past 38 years. Every year we enjoy orchids, both common and rare, cowslips, primroses, wood anemones and many more plant species; Also Muntjac deer, Adonis blue, Common blue and the very rare Large Blue butterflies; last year we were lucky to have a very rare flock of waxwings on the common for a couple of weeks.The excellent Felt and Lavender Bakehouse cafes are just a 20-25 minute walk from Alma Cottage along the stroudwater canal, and the very popular Stroud Brewery with its pop-up kitchens is a 15 minute walk in the opposite direction along the canal. A 15-20 minute walk in different directions across the common brings you to The Old Lodge, The Amberley Inn, The Black Horse, and The Ship Inn pubs. The excellent Ragged Cot pub is about a 30 minute walk. Finally the incredibly popular Winstones ice cream parlour is also a 20 minute walk in yet another direction. Most of these are within reach without having to walk along any roads,Alma Cottage benefits from winter sun even on the shortest days in mid-winter, and the garden room receives the full benefit from this, becoming comfortably warm with the heating off when it is freezing outside.We use the garden room as our main living area virtually the whole year round, it being a very bright and uplifting space with views of the secluded garden and the valley. This room has many lighting options to create various ambiences.The garden is private and not overlooked, with mature trees including specimen Davidia Involucrata (pocket handkerchief tree) and Betula Jacquemontii (Himalayan Birch), and also a Copper Beech tree which provides shade in the summer for the decking.The no-through lane means there is no passing traffic, making it very safe for pets and children.The reason we are leaving is to move closer to family in Herefordshire, since we are now both retired.
